Spidell and Smith Funeral Homes has been serving the Brewster, Mount Eaton and Sugarcreek area community for many years. We’re thankful to be an important part of this community and will continue our longstanding legacy of helping families honor their loved ones.
Smith History
Robert L. Smith purchased the former Lingler Funeral Home on North Broadway Street in Sugarcreek in 1983. He operated as Smith Funeral Home until he purchased the former Butler-Varns Funeral Home, also in Sugarcreek in 2008. He consolidated the two businesses and moved to the Butler-Varns building on W. Main Street. The name of the funeral home changed to Smith-Varns.
In 2016, Bob purchased the former Beachy’s Restaurant on Andreas Drive in Sugarcreek and following an extensive remodeling project moved the funeral home to our new and very spacious location.
In 2011, Bob acquired the former Lebold Funeral Home in Bolivar. Following a large addition and remodeling project the funeral home operates as the Lebold-Smith Funeral Home.
Spidell History
Our funeral home was founded in Mount Eaton, Ohio in 1888 by Jules Desvoignes. Mr. Desvoignes operated a furniture store and funeral home at our current location on Main Street. Following his untimely death in 1926, Jules son, Harris W. Desvoignes, a local school teacher and funeral director, took over the business. It was known as the Desvoignes Funeral Home until 1973 when C. Waid Spidell purchased the firm.
The firm was known as the Desvoignes-Spidell Funeral Home until 1980 when Waid opened a second location in Brewster, Ohio and changed the name to Spidell Funeral Home. The Brewster Chapel is located in the former North Brewster Elementary School.
Waid's son, Scott W. Spidell, joined the business in 1991 following graduation from mortuary science school and purchased the business from his father in 2006.
In 2009 Navarre native John L. Feucht joined the firm. John has been serving families of Stark County for more than forty years with the Atkinson-Feucht and Karlo-Feucht Funeral Homes.
Partnering for the Future
In 2018, close friends Robert Smith and Scott Spidell started a business partnership together. Always looking for ways to better serve their loyal client families, they found methods to share duplicated services and processes. These new shared methods will help guide us into the future.
